27 February, 19:00-21:00, BNP Paribas Securities Services
Sex, murder and corporate magazines

or how to captivate an oversubscribed audience

Mark Smith, Schlumberger, and Anne Fleming, Ad Nova

Corporate magazines today are forced to vie for the attention of their readers with a vast array of exciting consumer media. How can a corporate magazine compete successfully against such popular rivals? By respecting a few common-sense tips and guidelines, corporate publications can become powerful communications tools that get their target readers both interested and involved.

Mark Smith is publications manager at Schlumberger. For seven years he managed, wrote and produced InterChange, Schlumberger’s internal worldwide magazine (circulation 80,000). Now he oversees the 20-odd regional magazines produced by the company. Prior to joining Schlumberger, Mark spent six years as managing editor at the French edition of Reader’s Digest, wrote for a variety of magazines in the U.S. (Runner’s World, Digital Audio), and worked as a freelance writer of books in New York City.

Anne Fleming is director of Ad Nova, a communications agency specializing in the production of communications tools in English. Before creating Ad Nova in 2002, Anne worked as art director for consumer magazines both in the US and in France. She also designed corporate communications and books.

This event will be held in English, but questions can be in either French or English.

Just a Lot of Hot Air? Communicators Debate Climate Change

At an informal lunch on 14 December, nine communicators talked about the role of communications in addressing climate change. Reasons for attending included wanting insights on how other sectors discuss such issues, hoping to better understand how climate change is affecting clients’ strategic thinking and considering new career paths. Although the animated conversation strayed a bit into how to resolve climate change, the passionate response to the topic made it clear that IABC should hold another, longer event on the theme. If you’d like to make this happen, please contact Jonathan Duff or Alexandra Beverley.

A Great-Tasting Welcome to IABC

At the invitation of Charles Znaty, CEO of Pierre Hermé Paris, new members of IABC France gathered at the renowned Pierre Hermé shop in the Pasteur area of Paris on November 8, for a unique tasting of those infamous and mouth-watering macarons. They were also learned tips for optimizing their membership. The informal setting and delicious tasting was ideal for new members to get to know each other and to meet other IABC members.

The evening kicked-off with a few words from Charles, the communications genius behind the commercial success of the Pierre Hermé brand. Charles is also a long-term IABC France member. He says creativity has always been key to Pierre Hermé’s success – in the kitchen and in the communications & marketing departments! Pierre Hermé pastries are acclaimed worldwide and Vogue magazine’s US edition called Pierre Hermé ‘the Picasso of pastry’. The delicious taste of that macaron à l’huile d’olive still lingers on the palate!
Kristen Sukalac welcomed new members and talked briefly about the myriad of IABC benefits available from networking and learning opportunities to international conferences and much more. She emphasized the importance of being active within the association so each member can obtain what he or she wants from IABC.

IABC France has the following committees: Communications, Professional Development (events and related activities), Membership, Career Evolution and Finance and project-based opportunities for engagement exist. One of our priorities is to involve members in these committees and expand their activities in order to enable more face-to-face networking, a greater foundation for local and global knowledge exchange and more events focused on industry best practices, sharing ideas, debating with colleagues and gaining insight.
IABC France has scheduled a second new member event towards the end of the first quarter. The date will be confirmed at a later stage.
For more about Pierre Hermé pastries, visit www.pierreherme.com or the article about the brand in the November 2005 issue of Communication World (www.iabc.com/cw/private/pdf/2005/CW_NDEurope.pdf).
